Homeless on the High Desert

Fascism creeps, it sneaks in the backdoor …

The White Roseimages (German: die Weiße Rose) was a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany, consisting of students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor. The group became known for an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign, lasting from June 1942 until February 1943, that called for active opposition to dictator Adolf Hitler’s regime.

The six most recognized members of the German resistance group were arrested by the Gestapo, tried for treason and beheaded in 1943. The text of their sixth leaflet was smuggled by the jurist Helmuth James Graf von Moltke out of Germany through Scandinavia to the United Kingdom, and in July 1943, copies of it were dropped over Germany by Allied planes, retitled “The Manifesto of the Students of Munich”.[1]

Another member, Hans Conrad Leipelt, who helped distribute Leaflet 6 in Hamburg, was executed on…

  1. Quite a post…quite scary.
Just lately I’ve come to feel the game is all over and it’s beyond hope or repair. Humans are and always have been their own worst enemy, some more than others, but we all pay the price..

Just been a “downer” for me lately…I get so tired of it and overwhelmed by it all. And the question I ask myself over and over is how otherwise decent people (not the white supremacy groups, the far right religious nutcases and the ultra rich who care nothing except for more money and power) can support this abomination.

  2. I think it’s combination of things. The generation that fought the original Nazis are mostly dead. The children of that generation are elderly & many of them don’t remember or don’t want to remember or they are like my mother, brainwashed by FOX news (I don’t recognize my mother sometimes). The Vietnam generation are saw their jobs being shipped overseas & feel they got shafted by the government so they don’t mind trump blowing everything up. I hear that all the time. I don’t understand what they think they’re going to get out of that but I think they’re in such bad health now & don’t have much time left so who cares. They really don’t care about the younger generation, even their own kids. They literally do not give a fuck about anyone but themselves. It’s about their taxes, their 401K, their next vacation. I hear it all the time.

I came up in the 1960’s & I think that my generation saw the Nazi’s either as buffoons, like in Hogan’s Heroes, or as the losers in the great war, WWII, from all the war movies that were produced in that era & made up the bulk of TV formatting in those years. So nobody in my generation takes the threat of fascism seriously at all. “It can’t happen here” is what you hear from people my age.

People younger than me are just struggling to keep going. Working 40-60 hours a week, raising their kids, paying off their student loans, doing yard work if they own a home. My son just graduated college & he has two jobs. He is very concerned about the political situation & he wants to get out of the country but he’s too busy working right now. I think that’s the thing with everyone.

When I was a kid, I was ALWAYS very interested in Nazi Germany & not just the wartime Germany but the everyday part … what would it be like for a girl like me. I think I am getting my wish … finding out what it is like. Only in an American way.

The thing is, you don’t notice the horror as it is happening. & this has been happening to us for a very long time. When did you start noticing? Was it November 2016? Or the start of the campaign, 2015? Or was it the start of the Iraq War? Or maybe the signing of the Patriot Act? Or perhaps 9/11? Or maybe it was one of the many criminal acts of Ronald Reagan. Or maybe even the assassination of JFK. See … what I mean?
