The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I has presented its Climate Change 2021: Physical Science Basis report as a contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report on climate change, due in early 2022.

The report and its summary are written in the precise style and vocabulary of scientific publications that make ’objective’ statements.

  1. Hello Polly. I disagree with the conclusion that capitalisms must be abandoned to save the planetary habitat we need to thrive. Capitalisms in its simplest forms has been with man before we walked upright, many primates use a social barter system of grooming each other for example. We groom each other, we share food with each other. Capitalism doesn’t need to be abolished, just severely controlled. A constrained capitalism can be made to fix the problems caused by runaway capitalism. We do not need to throw the baby out with the bathwater nor do we need to reinvent the wheel on this. Hugs

  2. I thought for a few days before replying.

Capitalism did not exist before 1776. Before that, there were other economic systems, perhaps resembling capitalism (such as mercantilism), but these systems were not capitalism. The earliest economic forms were in fact, communistic. I am making this up … check out “Our Oriental Heritage” by Will Durant. There are other history books that will back me up … I am not going to list them all here.

As for Adam Smith, the father of capitalism (“The Wealth of Nations”), he would not recognize the predatory capitalism that exists today, especially what we have in the United States. Yes, we have to create a new system. Or simply go back to the New Deal … a synthesis of socialism & capitalism, which made the US strong & rich & what Reagan & the GOP ruined. Most people don’t even remember this system anymore. Socialism is a dirty word. But this system WORKED.

But what we have now … has to GO.
