CAT2

The Secret Power of Cats. Cats may have notoriety due to the various videos on the Internet showing their antics.  However their purpose on this planet is far more than being comical.  Ancient cultures have revered the cat for various reasons.  They saw the energy and power that a cat had and chose to keep that energy near them to protect them from negative forces.  I’m not talking about physical forces as much as spiritual. Cats bear a uniquely powerful aura, also known as an astral force, which works to repel negative energy. In ancient time cats were worshipped as gods. They have never forgotten this.

I never really understood cats until the year 2000.  Growing up I always wanted a cat, but my mother said I was allergic to them.  So I always had dogs and I loved each one of them.  I started drawing the back of the…

Knowing my Voice through Writing by Elise M. Edwards

Finding your voice

Elise M. Edwards's avatarFeminism and Religion

elise-edwardsOver the summer, I’ve been writing more than I do during the traditional academic year when other tasks consume the bulk of my workday.  I have spent more time experiencing the joy of creative discovery and production, but I’ve also had more time confronting the difficulties of creative work as I’ve wrestled with some of its unique challenges.  One of those challenges has been to refine my academic writing voice. I’ve approaches the challenge of developing my voice as both a spiritual and feminist practice and this has helped me find confidence in my work.

The Giant and the Sun – The one with the swallows…

Sue Vincent's avatarThe Silent Eye

We had assigned our second church, All Saints in the village of Piddletrenthide, to Mars, but nothing less warlike could you imagine than the tranquil stream and thatched cottages that surround one of the finest churches in the area.

Like the previous church, it has an inordinately tall tower, surmounted by more really intriguing gargoyles. Not for the first time, I am grateful for the long lens on the camera, which allows at least a glimpse of what is hiding in plain sight, just too high to see. It is an interesting church with a lot to see…

There is a plaque in the churchyard pointing out the Dumberfield graves… the family that was the inspiration for the D’Urberville family in Thomas Hardy’s book. Being a local man, Hardy crops up on many of the places we visited.

There are heraldic beasts perched on every protuberance around the exterior of…

Thus Saith Eve BOOK REVIEW by Katie M. Deaver

Add this book to the list!

Katie M Deaver's avatarFeminism and Religion

“I am the Queen of Sheba and I am not impressed.”  This is the first line of one of the monologues from chris wind’s book Thus Saith Eve.  This book features 18 stories of biblical women, and a 19th, Lilith, from Jewish mythology.  Each monologue offers a new interpretation and gives a voice to the women that we think we know.

In this book the voices and personalities of women such as Noah’s wife, Mary of Bethany, Zipporah, and Vashti are reimagined in an exciting and empowering way.  Each of the stories also features an appendix where the reader can learn more about the biblical or mythological context of the woman who is telling her story.

As in her other works, wind uses historical people, events, and understandings to build a truly wonderful source of feminist fiction.  In addition to being an extremely enjoyable and thought provoking…

Wonderful series. Check out the earlier visits to churches.

Sue Vincent's avatarThe Silent Eye

We had decided to visit six churches with our companions. That is a lot of churches to visit in one afternoon… and we were conscious that they are not everyone’s cup of tea. These ones, though, are  all old and interesting, and each one of them marks a point of the hexagram in the landscape with which we would work. We had assigned each of the churches to a place on the fire or water triangle, which carried with it a planetary attribution and colour, and each companion had chosen ‘their’ church by drawing lots.

We hoped it would be an interesting exercise and give a taste of the ‘thrill of the chase’ that we get when we are on the trail of mysteries, although you can neither predict how others will feel, nor assume they will feel as you do…or as you hope they will. We would have to…

Spirit Bands

really good

anthromichelle's avatarTo Be an Equal

This took place over a decade ago, but I feel like it’s pertinent. I’m doing my best to report it with integrity.

When I was in 6th grade, the administration of the school came up with the idea of spirit bands. They were little bracelets in our school colors that could be used for what was considered special rewards: going first in lunch lines, bathroom privileges and things like that. We were told that if we did not have bands, we could not buy juices or carbonated drinks at lunch, we would sit at a table designated for non-wearers and would have to wait for everyone else to get lunch before we could. You could lose your band if you were in trouble-which meant that any trip to the office took away your right to go to the restroom until you earned your band back (a process which took an…

FEMINIST FRIDAY 2018

Being from Buffalo, of course I love the Buffalo connection.

Bernadette's avatarHaddon Musings

As some of the regular readers of Haddon Musings may have observed, I have of late developed a keen interest in photography.  Well, of course, my curiosity led me to reading about women photographers and I was very happy to learn about Jessie who is considered the first woman photo journalist.  I think you will enjoy reading her story.

“Newspaper photography as a vocation for women is somewhat of an innovation, but is one that offers great inducements in the way of interest as well as profit. If one is the possessor of health and strength, a good news instinct . . . a fair photographic outfit, and the ability to hustle, which is the most necessary qualification, one can be a news photographer.”
